Preliminary and Preliminary for Schools are exams for people with an intermediate level of English.
B1 PRELIMINARY (PET) / PRELIMINARY FOR SCHOOLS (PET for Schools)
Preliminary and Preliminary for Schools are exams for people with an intermediate level of English. Preliminary is more appropriate for adults and Preliminary for Schools for school pupils. Preparing for these exams is a way to develop and improve your knowledge of English because it will give you a practical use of the language in a variety of daily situations (work, study and leisure). The exams correspond to the Level B1 of the Common European Framework (CEFR).
At B1 level, candidates should be able to:
- Understand the key points in clear instructions and public announcements.
- Cope satisfactorily with most situations which you might find yourself in when you are a tourist in an English-speaking country.
- Ask simple questions and take part in real conversations.
- Write short texts.
What are the components of Preliminary/Preliminary for Schools?
They comprise four parts:
Reading: 45 minutes
You will have to understand simple written information, like signs, messages, notes, labels, postcards, emails. Some exercises will test your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.
Writing: 45 minutes
You will have to show that you can use grammar and vocabulary in two texts: a compulsory email (100 words) and another text which may be a story or an article (also 100 words).
Listening: approximately 30 minutes
You will have to show that you can understand the meaning of a series of recorded listening materials such as announcements, the giving of information, short dialogues and an interview. You will need to be able to understand the attitude and intentions of the people speaking.
Speaking: 10-12 minutes
Candidates do the speaking test in pairs. You will have to show your spoken level of English by participating in a conversation, asking and answering questions, describing a photo, speaking freely about what you do and don’t like and expressing your opinions.
